Sprout Creek Farm's Cow Herd

Milking Mothers and Dry Cows

Our MIlking Mothers make up the majority of the cow herd. At this point, we are milking a total of 25 cows, but that number changes throughout the year when new calves are born. Many of these milkers are pregnant and will freshen sometime in the next nine months.

Dry cows are those who have had at least one calf, but are not milking at this time. Two months before they freshen, we will dry them off to give them a break. After they do calve, it's right back to work.

Heifers (Teenagers)

Charlie, Calista (Cali), Nicole, Prancer, and
Ellie Toussaint

These girls are old enough and big enough to be with the milking herd, but too young and small to have their babies yet. Some of them are pregnant with their first calf, but will not freshen for a few more months. Once that happens, they will become part of the milking mothers group.

Heifers (Yearlings and unders)

Roo, Senorita, Torrential Rain (Torrie),Celeste, Alabama (Alley), Amani, Emilee, Bossie, Bree, Sherman (Tank), Sasha, and Molassus

We have two groups of young heifers: the younger calves are in the nursery and the older ones are outside. They are too small to be with the milking herd and the younger calves are still getting milk that we save for them when we milk their mothers.
